How to Balance Privacy as a Creator

Sharing plans prematurely can hinder success by releasing dopamine or inviting negativity. This blog shares tips for setting boundaries, selective sharing, and focusing on achievements instead.

Have you ever told someone your plans, only for them to backfire? Or shared personal or business updates on social media, only to find they never work out as planned? This happens because when you talk about your goals, your brain releases dopamine, tricking it into feeling like you've already accomplished what you set out to do.

In Tanzania, there's a saying that sharing your plans invites the "evil eye" or even "juju." Maybe it’s true, or maybe it isn’t. But what if you’re a content creator or influencer whose job is sharing daily vlogs or personal life updates? How do you balance that without oversharing?

Let me share what worked for me. I used to love posting my plans on social media until I realized this habit was holding me back. Once I identified the problem, I restructured my content strategy to stay intentional and focused.

Here are 5 tips I still use to avoid oversharing your plans, whether you’re an influencer or content creator:

1. Set Boundaries on What to Share

Decide which aspects of your personal or professional life are off-limits. For example, avoid discussing specific relationships, sensitive topics, or locations where you frequently spend time. Boundaries help protect your privacy

2. Share Highlights, Not Details

Instead of oversharing, focus on the bigger picture. For example, you can post the outcome of a project rather than the step-by-step process or show snippets of an event instead of every interaction. This keeps your audience engaged without giving away too much.

3. Talk About Achievements in Hindsight

Share your wins after they’ve already happened. For instance, if you’re working on a business idea or project, wait until it’s launched or successful before sharing it. This approach helps avoid awkward explanations if plans change or don’t go as expected.

4. Use Selective Sharing Features

Leverage tools like Instagram’s “Close Friends” feature or private stories to share updates selectively. This way, you can share personal moments with a trusted group without exposing everything to the public.

5. Pause Before Posting

Before you post anything, ask yourself if it aligns with the image you want to project. Avoid sharing when you’re emotional or vulnerable, as this can lead to unfiltered and impulsive posts you might regret later.

Bonus Tip: Find Other Outlets for Your Excitement

Sometimes, you might feel the urge to share your plans out of excitement. Instead, write in a journal or record a private video to get it out of your system. If you must talk, share with someone you trust completely—or keep it to yourself!

Real-Life Inspiration

Take Ali Abdaal, for example. We only found out he was married when he posted a wedding photo on social media. He kept his relationship entirely private, leaving everyone pleasantly surprised. His story proves that keeping certain things private can make milestones even more special.

Final Thoughts

Trust me, you’ll achieve more when you keep your plans to yourself and let your results speak for you. Your accomplishments will naturally attract recognition without the need for constant updates.
