Before starting a side hustle in Tanzania, you first need to understand how to begin and how to make your side hustle profitable. There are more than 30 side hustles out there, and most of them can be started with little to no capital.

Let’s assume someone has never heard about side hustles. What is a side hustle? Thank God for Google! According to Google, a "side hustle" is a flexible job or activity that you do outside your main job. It’s a way to earn extra money in your free time by using your skills or interests.

Now that you know what a side hustle is, you may wonder, “Why should I have a side hustle?”

  1. Extra Income: A side hustle can give you an additional income stream. Even if you already have a full-time job, having a side hustle can help you increase your income, so you don’t rely solely on your salary.

  2. Safety Net: It can help you build a safety net for unexpected costs or during economic downturns. You never know what might happen in the future. What if you lose your job? A side hustle can give you a backup plan to fall back on.

  3. Pursue Your Passions: A side hustle lets you explore interests outside your main job. Some people have their dream jobs, while others work jobs they don’t like but do so because they need to provide for their families. With a side hustle, you can choose something you're passionate about and turn it into an income stream. You become your own boss.

  4. Gain Business Knowledge: Having a side hustle allows you to test out new ideas without fully committing. You gain business knowledge and can learn more about running a business before deciding if you want to dive deeper into it. Think of it like a trial period before fully jumping in.

  5. Learn New Skills: A side hustle helps you learn valuable skills such as sales, accounting, or leadership, which can benefit your current or future career.

  6. Sense of Accomplishment: A side hustle gives you control over your finances and can provide a sense of achievement. You get to decide how you spend your time and grow as a person.

Now that you know why you should have a side hustle, you might be thinking, "I don’t know how to start." Don’t worry, I’ve got you covered!

Here’s how you can start a side hustle:

  1. Identify Your Skills and Interests:
Your side hustle doesn’t have to be related to your main job, though it could be. For example, you may be an accountant during the day and offer bookkeeping services at night. Alternatively, you might be a doctor during the day and a website designer at night. Choose a side hustle that you enjoy so it doesn’t lead to burnout.
Here are a few questions to help you get started:

    • What skills do I already use regularly?

    • Do I have the mental, emotional, and physical capacity to use those skills outside my regular job?

    • What other skills would I enjoy using regularly?

  2. After identifying your skills, think about how you can turn them into a business.

  3. Choose a Side Hustle Idea:
There are many side hustle options. Here are a few examples: freelance writing, graphic design, online tutoring, virtual assistant work, selling handmade crafts, dog walking, house cleaning, driving for Uber or Bolt, or renting out a spare room on Airbnb.

  4. Conduct Market Research:
Understand your target audience, competition, and pricing for your service. This will help you know if your business idea is viable.

  5. Set Up Your Online Presence:
Create a professional website or social media profiles to showcase your services and attract clients.

  6. Start Small:
Begin with a few clients or projects to test your business model and gain experience. Don't worry if it feels slow at first—growth takes time.

  7. Price Your Services Competitively:
Research industry standards and set fair rates for both you and your clients. Pricing is important, so make sure it reflects your skills and the value you provide.

  8. Market and Promote Your Business:
Use social media, networking, and word-of-mouth to reach potential customers. Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there!

  9. Manage Your Time Effectively:
Allocate specific hours to your side hustle and make sure it doesn’t interfere with your primary job.

  10. Track Your Income and Expenses:
Keep records of your earnings and costs. This will help you analyze your progress and find areas for improvement.
