Before I started writing this blog, I Googled, “How can you define your call in life?” It explained it perfectly:
Your calling is something that uses your natural gifts, what you love doing, and what’s important to you.
Here’s how to find your calling:
Try New Things – Experiment with different activities to see what really excites you.
Listen to Your Intuition – Pay attention to how different activities make you feel. Positive feelings can guide you to what’s right for you.
Recognize Your Natural Talents – Think about what you’re naturally good at and what makes you feel fulfilled.
Identify What You Can’t Live Without – If you can’t imagine life without doing something, it could be your calling.
Consider Your Values – Stay true to what matters to you. Your calling aligns with your core values.
Follow Your Curiosity – Curiosity can lead to passion, so explore what catches your interest.
Know That Your Calling Can Come at Any Age – Discovering your calling doesn’t need to happen at a certain age or be a huge career shift. It can come in surprising ways at any stage of life.
Finding Balance Between Passion and Practicality
People often believe they have to stick with jobs they dislike because they pay the bills. This may be true sometimes, but if you’re willing to make sacrifices and plan, there’s room to do what you love and earn from it.
For example, if you want to be a musician, you may need to work another job to support yourself as you build your career. Balancing a job with your passion is a common path and shows dedication to your dream.
My Journey to Digital Marketing
After high school, I felt lost. I returned home to Tanzania, waiting for exam results, unsure what my future held. When my results came, I hadn’t passed, so I retook my exams. The second time, I passed, but I was still uncertain about my next steps. I knew I wanted to go to university, but I had no idea what to study.
Without a clear direction, I followed my friends’ choices. I eventually completed a Diploma in International Relations at Riara University and got an internship as an assistant administrator in Nairobi. When COVID-19 hit, I returned home. While I did well in International Relations, I felt unfulfilled—like I was ignoring what I truly wanted.
Then, I got a full-time job as an administrator at a packaging company. One day, I saw a YouTube ad about online jobs. It caught my attention, so I watched the entire ad, which opened my mind to new possibilities.
I started researching online work, feeling an immediate sense of excitement and connection. During the pandemic, my siblings and I had started an Instagram account where we filmed dance challenges and trendy transitions. I was behind the camera, coming up with ideas, editing videos, and coordinating shoots. I enjoyed it so much; it felt like a hobby, something I genuinely looked forward to.
After seeing that video, I thought, “Why not give this a try?” Even though my friends warned me about online scams, I followed my curiosity. I dug deep into online business and digital marketing, staying up until 3 a.m., watching YouTube videos, reading articles, and taking notes.
That’s when it hit me: I wasn’t on the right path, and I needed to make a change. I signed up for online courses in digital marketing and Google Ads, and I started learning everything I could. At my job, whenever I finished my daily tasks, I’d slip on my earphones, open my notebook, and dive into more learning. I downloaded videos and articles to continue studying at home.
Finally, I found something I was passionate about. Digital marketing didn’t feel like “work”; it felt like a hobby I loved. I often stay up late now, happily working because I’ve realized this is my calling. I followed my curiosity, took a chance, and discovered what truly brings me joy.
Additional Tips for Finding Your Calling
Be Open to Unexpected Opportunities – Sometimes, your calling can appear in ways you wouldn’t expect, like an ad or a casual conversation. Stay open to trying new things, even if they seem unrelated.
Commit to Continuous Learning – Whether through online courses, YouTube videos, or books, keep learning about what interests you. Knowledge can help you discover if something is truly right for you.
Seek Mentors or Role Models – Finding someone in a career you admire can give you guidance and insight into your own path. Learn from their journey and ask for advice if you can.
Don’t Fear Mistakes or Changes – Sometimes, we’re scared to make changes or fail, but those experiences often lead us to new growth. Each step, even the wrong ones, brings you closer to what’s right for you.
Create a Realistic Plan – Finding your calling doesn’t mean abandoning everything for a new passion. Try to balance your responsibilities while gradually building a path toward what you love.
Stay Patient and Persistent – Discovering your calling is rarely instant. It might take time, so be patient and don’t give up.
Remember, your calling doesn’t need to be a big, life-changing career. It can be something small that brings you joy, and it can grow as you grow. Follow your curiosity, and trust that each step you take brings you closer to a fulfilling life.
